Recently my friend and I enjoyed a fun filled day of Christmas cheer in San Francisco. Shopping, dining, cocktails, and Christmas splendor are the course of the day! This year we decided to try something new – High Tea at the Rotunda Restaurant at Neiman Marcus on Union Square. As soon as you enter Neiman Marcus you are greeted by this enormous Christmas tree, which spans all four floors of the department store, and fills the glorious stained glass domed ceiling.
On the fourth floor of Neiman Marcus, the Christmas tree rises to this beautiful view from our table. The Rotunda Restaurant circles the beautiful tree in a gilded wonderland of elegance – a perfect setting for high tea. The far windows look out towards Union Square where you can see the exceptionally large Christmas tree, as well as a Menorah, which is lite through the eight days of Hanukkah. At night, the Square’s ice skating rink is filled with skaters enjoying some winter fun!
Of course, a day like today must start off with a glass of champagne! A toast to a beautiful friendship that has been with us for over 20 years!
Tea followed champagne, where the choices where endless. Of course, nothing but the best tea for Neiman Marcus!
This lovely popover and strawberry butter where our first course for high tea. They were delicious and were a nice pairing with the champagne!
And then came the star of high tea – the two-tiered plate with the savory canopies on the bottom: cucumber sandwiches, pears wrapped with prosciutto, chicken salad with grapes sandwiches, gravlax and cheese sandwiches, egg salad with bacon sandwiches, and roasted pepper with goat cheese sandwiches, as well as english scones. The top tier had an assortment of sweets. The plate was served with clotted cream, strawberry jam and lemon curd. Wow!
High tea at the Rotunda was delicious and picture perfect! It was a fabulous addition to our annual tradition to visit San Francisco at Christmas time! I should also mention a great reprieve to weary shoppers and sore feet, after a long day of walking from store to store. What a rough life!!
Merry Christmas everyone!
