Northstar Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe

I love to ski!  I get excited when the first snowfall of the winter begins….it means swishing down the slopes is close behind.  Along with most Californians, my family and I enjoy Lake Tahoe year round.  We have a family home in Lake Tahoe where we have shared many happy memories with family and friends.  My husband, son, and I enjoy many winter outdoor activities such as snowshoeing, hiking, tobogganing, and skiing.

Our family home is close to Northstar Ski Resort, which is where we primarily ski throughout the winter.  This year I purchased my first Northstar season pass, but unfortunately, we have not had much snow this winter in California.  The jet stream has driven all the storm systems north through Oregon and Washington, and then on east.  January in California had unseasonable sunny days with highs reaching the 70s.  So in early February, when the Sierras finally received a foot of snow, I called my girlfriends Chris and Karen and we quickly hit highway 80 to Lake Tahoe.

Once arriving in Lake Tahoe I always stop at Tahoe Dave’s in King’s Beach for any extra equipment that my friends or myself might need for skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing.  I have been renting demo skis from Tahoe Dave’s for years now.  Last year I finally found the sweet ride that I had been waiting for!  Chris and Karen needed to rent skis, so we stopped by Tahoe Dave’s.  I am very appreciative of a business that remembers me and my repeated business.  Tahoe Dave’s is such a place. The employees always greet me and my friends with a smile and are always eager to help us find what we need.  The employees are fun to talk with and I often learn from them about Tahoe and skiing.  Most of Tahoe Dave’s employees have been with the company for many years.  In the summer, Tahoe Dave’s turns to summer sport rentals.  In the second photo below, the man on the left is Travis, the Repair Shop Manager, and the man on the right is Jay, the Assistant Manager.   Jay is very knowledgeable about skiing, boarding, and just about all things Tahoe!

My girlfriends and I headed to Northstar where we meet two more friends for a full day of skiing.  Carrie and Jasper have been my friends for a very long time….so long that it was before marriage and kids!  They live in Reno now where they love the life style.  When I visit Lake Tahoe, I do my best to include a visit with Carrie and Jasper.  Skiing with them is such a treat for me!

Northstar is one of the largest ski resorts in the Tahoe basin.  Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White calls Northstar home.  Shaun has his own private half pipe at Northstar.  The ski trails are quite extensive at Northstar, which include a terrain park and half pipe for snow boarding and trick skiing.  Northstar has 10 lifts and one gondola, 11 green beginner runs, 44 blue intermediate runs, and 42 black diamond advanced runs.  There is something for everyone!  And, the resort is so large and expansive, that you can find runs that are not crowded.  From the top of the summit you can see a beautiful view of Lake Tahoe.  It is a great place to stop for a break and sit outside in the sunshine and enjoy a warm lunch and a cold beer, in the company of your friends!

But for those of you that are a little more adventuresome, try Northstar’s famous Bloody Mary.  This drink is not your typical Bloody Mary….oh no!  It comes with two shots of Vodka, topped off with Firestone Oatmeal Stout, and adorned with candied bacon!  The spicy Mary mix is homemade and really has some heat.  As my friend Jasper likes to say, “That drink has some hair!”

After a full day of great fun on the slopes we worked our way down to the Northstar Village where fire pits and couches await.  It feels so great to finally tug off the ski boots and put on the après ski boots, order a cocktail, and indulge on S’mores…courtesy Northstar!  It is a very nice touch!  I usually order a Dirty Snowman….a concoction of hot chocolate, Bailey’s, Vanilla Vodka, and Kaluha.  Yum!!!

The Village’s centerpiece is an ice rink, where children and adults enjoy a little play time.  The Village also includes many restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as their ski school and day care.  At one end of the ice rink, a stage is located where local bands perform in the late afternoon while visitors are enjoying the Village.

Many visitors stay at the resort at Northstar, rent a condominium or cabin, or stay at the adjoining Ritz Carlton, which has its own lift to Northstar ski resort.  Very convenient.

Too much fun!!!

I have had so many wonderful times at this fantastic resort with family and friends.  Skiing is pure joy for me.  It is a great day when I head home exhausted from a day of glorious skiing in the beautiful Sierras that surround Lake Tahoe.  Lake Tahoe is truly the most beautiful place on the earth!
