Like most of you, I love to go wine tasting with my husband and friends. Over the years I have tasted in many of California’s wine regions and have enjoyed their numerous appellations. But Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, and El Dorado are a good distance from my home, which take a planned weekend. There is something to be said for the local bar in your neighborhood – you just can’t beat the convenience of an impromptu visit! Only 20 minutes from my house, up in the Santa Cruz mountains, lies a winery which my husband and I just love to go visit. We are wine club members at this winery and enjoy popping up the mountain to go pick up our quarterly wine club shipment. We usually bring a picnic or buy a delicious lunch at the winery. It is our four-times-a-year, “date day.” And we absolutely love our visits to Regale Winery!
The winery was built in traditional Italian architechture and is quite reminiscent of old Tuscany. Our visits to the winery feel like stepping back in time and place to when we visited Tuscany in 2008. The winery sits in a lovely oak studded valley and has an expansive vista of the mountains and estate grape vines that stretch out into the valley. I immediately relax when I step on to this lovely property!
The owner of Regale, Larry Schaadt, has had the property beautifully landscaped to harmonize with the architectural style. In addition to the estate vineyard and Live Oaks, the property is adorned with many fruit and olive trees as well as blooming roses, lavender, flowering shrubs, which surround a very large and beautiful fountain. The winery has provided many tables and chairs for visitors to sit and enjoy the wine and landscape during the beautiful weather.
Regales wines are delicious! I really enjoy their chardonnay, zinfandel, and sparkling rose – but Regale produces many other fabulous wines such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, blanc de noir, and makes a delicious zinfandel port, which they serve with chocolate. Regale grows their grapes on this estate, as well as in Alexander Valley, the Russian River area, and along the Sonoma coast.
On the weekends, when Regale Winery is open for tasting, the winery brings in specialty caterers that create some delicious lunch items to be purchased if you did not bring a picnic from home. I have seen salads, paella, and on this day, pizza from the winery’s wood burning pizza oven. The fresh dough rose to be soft yet crisp on the bottom when baked in the pizza oven, which was adorned with the freshest and simplest ingredients. The pizza was absolutely delicious!
And did I mention Bocce Ball?! OK…who doesn’t love a game that you can play while holding a glass a wine?! Bocce Ball is a simple and fun game that anyone can learn in just a few minutes. And anyone can play at any age. The crushed oyster shell bocce ball court is regulation length and sits at the edge of the property with the expansive view before you. Just beautiful! I have celebrated my birthday with my family at this court with the most amazing picnic, while sipping Regale’s delicious wine. It just doesn’t get any better that this!
I must add that due to the popularity of Regale Winery, the inside garden area, where the picnic tables and bocce ball court are located, is for Members Only. Regale Winery does have an inside tasting room where non-members can taste all of their wines as well as the estate olive oil. But if you are in the area, and know someone that is a member, do visit with friends and enjoy this exceptional property and their exceptional wines.
