Last August I received an email from the art director of South Bay Accent Magazine.  During an internet search for a food photographer, he found my blog on Love Apple Farm.  He like my work and offered me a job to photograph the feature article for  the upcoming August/September 2014 issue of South Bay Accent Magazine.  I was thrilled to accept the job beacause the assignment featured light fare from eleven local restaurants in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.  I needed to travel to eleven restaurants within a week and photograph two menu items per restaurant.  The art director would chose from the two shots which would be used in the final layout.  I hit the ground running!

The restaurants were Manresa in Los Gatos, Dio Deka in Los Gatos, Lark Creek Blue in San Jose, Le Papillon in San Jose, Rasam’s in Sunnyvale, LV Mar in Redwood City, Flea Street in Menlo Park, Cascal in Mt. View, Madera in Menlo Park, John Bentley’s in Redwood City, and Tamarine in Palo Alto.  They were all elegant high end restaurants.  What more could a food photographer ask for!

I traveled with my photography equipment to each restaurant and set up by the window to utilize the beautiful natural light.   I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the chefs or managers at each restaurant and enjoyed collaborating with them to achieve beautiful food photography.  I told that the publisher Sherran Lacey would select the cover image and it was not guranteed that one of my images would be selected.  I would have to wait and see what appeared on the cover once the publication hit news stands.

To my great surprise one of my images was selected for the cover shot on the magazine.  The shot is from Madera Restaurant at the Rosewood Resort in Menlo Park.  The dish was created by Executive Chef Peter Rudolph who has been with Madera since its opening over five years.  The cover dish is a beautiful piece of Alaskan King Salmon with shaved cauliflower, pistachios, chanterelle mushrooms, fresh apricots, and green coriander.  It was a pleasure to work with Chef Rudolph and photography this beautifully styled dish.  I photographed the salmon dish with natural light and additional fill light with a Cannon camera and a EF-S 15-85mm lens.
